December 2019 F2F Meeting Materials
The University of California, Santa Cruz (Team Calcium) hosted the fifth BioData Catalyst Face-to-Face meeting in Santa Cruz, CA on December 9 & 10, 2019. 52 BDCatalyst consortium and NHLBI members participated in-person with additional virtual attendees.
Day 1 began with team introductions and goals for the December F2F, with our meeting goal being Stayin’ Go Live. Our top objective: to stay on track, in unison, for Go Live. After the success of Boston’s F2F, the consortium then split again into 2 large breakout sessions: our PI Breakout and our Developers Go Lively.
Session One of the day split into two groups, one reviewing “PIC-SURE (an example of the API running on a Jupyter notebook on Seven Bridges” (presented by Paul Avillach and coordinated by Alison Leaf), and the second group reviewing “GWAS on Terra” (presented by Alex Waldrop and coordinated by Beth Sheets).
After lunch, consortium members returned to plenary for a session of o16n LIVE! led by Brandi Davis-Dusenberry and Bob Grossman.
Session Two contained two breakouts, one for “Gen3 User Access” (led by Garrett Rupp, Alex VanTol, Brian Hannafious) and another for “Aggregating and filtering variant annotations for multiple variant” GWAS (led by Deepti Jain and coordinated by Alison Leaf).
All sessions and breakouts for the day then provided report backs.
The BioData Catalyst Coordinating Center (BDC3) gave three presentation updates for the projects it is currently facilitating: BioData Catalyst Fellows Program; User Services; and Cloud IC Interoperability.
Day 2 saw heavy modification to the agenda after the dialogue and progress made during Day 1. The meeting opened with a frank conversation about the considerations for Go Live, and what meeting attendees could agree were the minimum requirements for Go Live. Additional discussion included external community pressures, data availability, creation of a dependency map, and development of the BDC “search suite”.
The second day also held the working group breakouts, including Tools and Apps, User Engagement, and Data Harmonization.
The consortium regrouped for a group session on Tutorial Development led by the BDC3. After lunch, Stan Ahalt led our Release 2 Plenary Discussion: “Rocks in the Riverbed”. The meeting concluded with final thoughts from Jon Kaltman, Alastair Thomson, David Mendelson, and Ingrid Borecki.
Overall, the meeting concluded with very concrete decisions about what should and should not block Go Live, and what action was needed by all teams to move towards a more unified vision of the final BioData Catalyst Ecosystem.
