June 2024 Hybrid F2F Meeting
Overview
The BioData Catalyst Coordinating Center was proud to host the June ‘24 BioData Catalyst Face-to-Face meeting in Chapel Hill, NC on June 13 & 14, 2024. 80 people attended the event (41 in person), consisting of BDC consortium members, NHLBI staff, and other partners.
The morning of Day 1 focused on a series of presentations and discussions which centered on showing how the ecosystem has grown and developed, both in regards to its users and in its technical capabilities. These presentations were also forward-looking and sought to chart paths forward for the consortium in the areas of user Growth and Retention, engaging with data generators, and completing our New Development objectives. The afternoon of Day 1 featured four total breakout sessions with topics focusing on advancing select BDC interests, including preparing the ecosystem to be AI/Machine Learning ready by the end of the next fiscal year.
Day 2 was a half-day of presentations and conversations, with a special focus on engaging the TOPMed community. This included an update on the plans to migrate the TOPMed Exchange Area data to BDC, as well as results on interviews conducted with TOPMed researchers on BDC adoption within their community.
The meeting concluded with debriefs from the EEP members and NHLBI representatives where they highlighted some of the challenges users may face with the BioData Catalyst ecosystem, but also praised the project’s efforts in using FHIR for EHR data and leveraging LLMs for innovative solutions. The strong community outreach efforts were also praised, and several actionable recommendations were provided for the future of BDC.
